Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
300+ avid Harry Potter fans pre ordered the highly-anticipated finale novel from my outlet with the recommended retail price of RM109.90. Customers were happy with the price and placed the RM50 deposit without hesitation as they will be given a free limited edition tee, RM5 voucher and free breakfast for the first 100 who pre ordered the book and 10% off with member card for everyone.
I'd even call up to remind all of them about the launching of the book at 7.01am on Saturday morning (21/7)...
Unexpectedly, on Friday morning (20/7) when i flipped through the newspaper before going out for work... i saw it! A full color page in the first few pages of The Star - Tesco and Carrefour are selling the books for only RM69.90 each!!! I informed my colleagues about the price difference as soon as i stepped into the office. They all started to panicked.
Customers started calling in even before the outlet is opened. My superiors were busy explaining to them over the phone. Some even came to asked to cash refunds. And we received updated memo from the HQ every few minutes.
Finally at about 4pm, we got the internal memo saying that MPH, Popular, Times and Harris bookstores nationwide will withdraw the books off the shelves on Saturday in protest against Tesco and Carrefour's decision to sell the books at almost half the recommended retail price and we will only honoured and sell the books to customers who pre ordered the books before Saturday.

the notice in the outlet
sealed cartons of the books. i didnt managed to even catch a glimpse of the books.
cool eh?! haha.
even the pressmen made their ways into the outlet. interviewing my manager and customers who didnt manage to purchase the books on the day itself.
some were frustrated and coolly said they will get the books from ebay and amazon instead...
some said we shudnt do this as we will only be at the losing end...
some were really persistent... they wont leave until they get a copy of the book or until they know where to get them for sure.
... dats the power of Mr Potter.
