Cambodia Day 2

The first destination on Day 2 - Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Phnom Penh

The building is a former high school which was used by the Khmer Rouge regime as a prison and interrogation centre with classrooms converted into torture chambers. When I stepped into the vicinity, it was so eerie and cold to the extent I could not explain in words. The silence was almost deafening and the chilly wind certainly aggravates the whole situation - that's also the reason I didn't snap many photos here.

Please read the board for details of the Museum

The Graves - these victims were the last ones who had been killed here

Building covered with barbed wires to prevent the prisoners from jumping down (commit suicide)

The Gallows - please read the board below to see how they were used to torture the prisoners

The Security of Regulation - all prisoners must adhered to these instructions

The first building consists of tiny classrooms with one metal bed in each of the rooms. The translator narrated to us how the torture was done using the old photos on the wall for illustrations – and the next thing we know she mentioned that the stains on the floor and ceiling were blood of the victims – I didn’t expect this at all.

The second building stores classrooms that were divided into smaller cells that served as torture cells. The next room is filled with hundreds of mug shots of the victims; they were staring at me with their eyes wide open – men, women and children alike. Their numbering tags was pinned by safety pins through their neck and not on the shirt! There are some equipments and tools used for the torture and extermination together with skulls of victims. The skulls have cavities of bullet shots and fractures all over. It was suffocating to be in there.

I couldn't remember much about building three but it was somewhat identical to the first two buildings. When the translator asked if we would like to go upstairs, most of us already wanted to leave the place.

I survived on bread like this for the first half of Day 2

After the Genocide Museum, we went to Choeung Ek Genocidal Center (better known as The Killing Field) Many of the dead were former inmates in the Tuol Sleng prison.

The inside of the tower - filled with skulls of those killed in here

The killing tree against which executioners beat children

The Mass Graves

The Magic Tree - used as a tool to hang a loudspeaker which make sound (the sound from radio I assume) louder to avoid the moan of victims while they were being executed

Sightings of people sleeping in hammock everywhere are very common in Cambodia

Right after The Killing Field, we took a 6 hours bus ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. The whole journey was truly an eye opener - I'll go into that later.

We had dinner in Siem Reap town - that's fried rice :)

Angkor beer :)

Birdy Massage - any takers? :P

Bus

Gah!

Buses. I never liked them. After today, i won't be changing my mind any time soon.

Freakin' double decker bus. I spent the whole journey just squishing with YZ. It sucks to take a bus when you are tall sideways. =(

Am crashing with DY today. Will try to purchase tickets for more comfortable bus seats!!

P.S. Urgh. Bones aching all over. Both my knees ache whenever i take one step. I hope it's not dengue (!).

WEDD

*The wedding of Mustafa Shafiq & Azrina Afzal
* BlueWave Hotel Shah Alam
*The groom's family used to be our neighbour for almost 16 years before they moved out to a posh area in shah alam. I have been grown up with this family since i was a baabeyy.
*This is our first get together after 5 years we did not see each other

I was looking around for my childhood friends. And there they are! Muaz & Amira jadi pengapit, Abang long jadi MC, Abang Ngah jadi pengantin!

The crowd was small i guess, around 300pax. Personally in event perspective, sorry to say that the colour scheme was disaster! They blend gold & pink, A little bit of peach at the main table area & suddenly in a middle of nowhere the wedded was wearing blue??????

I loike the food serving gimmick, where they turn off the light to turn on the candlelight dinner spirit. Food was nice, especially when it comes with my fav soup, nevermind the zweliciouss strawberry caramel dessert. The prawn was urghhhhh, kalau pakai tangan tadi, dah lama aku abiskan!

I sat beside one of our neighbour, Aunty Nani & Uncle Ghows. You know what? One day i wanna be just like her! 50+ and still gorgeous and her hubby was cute indeed, HAHA

Before we are taking dis picture, Amira was lyke, "Dah nak balik da? da jumpa muaz? Jap2 i cari muaz, bole amik gambar skali" I was like "takpela, amik gmbar 2 org pun ok kot" withdatkindoffacelarhkan . Amira & Muaz ni la my rollerblade mate, polisentri buddies, geng masak2, hantu main sorok2. I dengan muaz sebaya, rumah sebelah-menyebelah plak tu, everyday pegi skola pon sama2, so kat sekolah mmg jadi mangsa gosip liar arr which is SO NOT TRUE.

From the left, Uncle razali, aunty maria, muaz (hiding at da back), the wedded, mum in purple.
Kami nak balik. DADA

JB?

Will be going to JB tomorrow to pay Grandma Rabbit and DY a visit as they'll be starting their medical training there.

I guess this is an opportunity to get out of my house to experience the rustic scenery (and crime rates? *wince* touch wood touch wood!) of Malaysia?

Have charged and updated my iPod for the freaking 4 1/2 hour bus journey. Sigh. Buses. I don't like. Brown Bear was supposed to drive, but you know la, parents and their eternal paranoia...

"Haiyo! Dangerous la. You kids are not experienced."

"Read the news. Those 4 people who drove to Penang. They banged the divider! U go read it online at Sin Chew."

I suppose long distance bus rides are quite OK as they are not public provided by private companies. Will explore JB using Rabbit's car. :D

Will be back on Wednesday, hopefully with more geographical knowledge.

whatever

I am VERY VERY pissed off today. I was stuck in the traffic jammed, and dammit how on earth this big uitm have no parking left this morning. I mean NONE.

Semua parking reserved for lecturers and staff. Nak parking kat PI xbole, nak parking kat kolej xbole, nak parking kat tepi jalan terus kena clamped. The proper student parking yg die bagi, tu la satu kat parking bertingkat tu, 3 floor je. Bebudak tu bkn double parking lagi triple pon ade tau. Kiranya kalo parking handbrake xley angkat, pagi parking kat sini ptg nk blk keta ko da ditolak sampai hujung dunia. Itu blum kes blocked keta org, tinggal no.phone je, bila kol 30mins br nk nmpk muka. Hello!! ko tak tau kira ke berapa ribu student yg bwk keta skrg? nuff said

Jadi atas kekangan yang berlaku pagi tadi, terlambat la msk kelas. 10mins late. Masuk2 je terus kena sembur ngan Prof. asyik dtg lmbt je... bla bla...ada kereta pon lmbt.. bla bla... bgn lmbt.. bla bla... saya 7.15 da sampai sini... bla bla.. ni x pukul 8 baru nk pecut gi kelas.. bla bla... pastu blocked keta lecturer... bla bla... bdk2 zmn skrg ni mewah sgt..... bla bla... student xlayak bwk keta... bla bla... mak bapak skrg ni manjakan sgt anak... bla bla.... ASSHOLE!

i woke up early dis morning to attend ur damn class after only 2hrs sleep last nite just to finished ur damn assignment. I know this is my second time being late. The first time is when u want to do the replacement class at 4pm, and suddenly changed it to 2pm, wif ONLY 20 minutes prior notice. Expecting that we will be there on time, as if my house is beside ur damn class!

i dont want to be mean but for 50yrs old women lyke you, unmarried, live alone, no kids, no responsibility, and just because u have NO LIFE doesnt mean that u can take away mine!
I felt sorry fo u and i tink u shud feel more sory fo urself. And before u want to fixing others just fixed up ur miserable life first!
*boley x cuti thaipusam ni pon dia nak buat kelas?

Bananas!

During my two-month tenure at Phileo Damansara 2, and after two to three weeks of eating the goddamn same cold economy rice, i came across this cool little cafe just round there corner.

Screaming Bananas! Cute name, don't ya think, and maybe a tad crazy? :D

Two screaming bananas guard the entrances! :D

Like some diners, they provide crayons for customers to doodle with. Instead of tablecloth, they line tables with large sheets of white paper. Fun! Especially for people with itchy hands. Like me. :)

Screaming Bananas serves some decent food. Not to say divine, but decent. They have a range of pasta, western grilled and fried dishes, along with a section of local favourites such as nasi goreng and nasi lemak (with jazzed up names).

The reason why i am holding back compliments is this!

The "Taj Mahal", which is basically steamed rice with beef rendang. And i hated the Taj Mahal. The cursed beef rendang was watery. What kind of beef rendang is watery? I suspect that they didn't microwave it properly AFTER keeping it frozen. Urgh.

Most annoying part was that, on my next visit with my CNX colleagues, YK ordered his nasi ulam with the same beef rendang (!) and when i speared a piece, it tasted all marvellous and non-watery. You say dulan anot?

Which says a little something about their QC. Bad QC!

Screaming Bananas has this lunch promo, which is a simple Entree + Drink combo. Add 5 bucks to that, you get a bowl of fantastic mushroom soup and the dessert of the day (which never changes, by the way).

My... Calamansi Plum. Slightly watery (!), but OK. Nothing to shout out about.

Grandma's Mushroom Soup. Or Mama's Homemade Mushroom Soup. Some funky name like that. This bowl of mushroom soup is kick ass, man! Fantastic. i was actually quite apprehensive and expecting those cheaplak Maggi watery (!!!) mushroom soups with pathetic dried mushroom bits you get at pizza hut, but no!

Grandma's Mushroom Soup was fantastic! It has a strong cheesy creamy taste and packs a pile of chopped up mushrooms in it. Two thumbs up. ;)

Sis's Spag Carbonara. Hmm. Ok ok laaaa. No big deal. This is nothing compared to those at Dave's and Frames.

This is the "dessert of the day", which never changes. I've been there for 3 times. Each time i got the same dessert. Anyway it's just a crepe wantan (with a teensie scoop of vanilla ice-cream wrapped within) with 3 little clouds of whipped cream drizzled with chocolate sauce.

I guess you can pretty much picture the taste in your mind? Whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce. You have to give them credit though, for coming up with a more interesting way of presenting 3 of the most cliched tastes in the world of desserts.

Their banana fritter is a whole different story. Delicious. After all, they have bananas in their name, should be a disgrace to screw it up right?

Looks kinda obscene, actually. Phallic object, with two spheres... Sometimes your mind just starts to... Anyway. Banana fritter. Very good. It has this sorta fragrance that is most appetizing. They drizzled the dessert with this light caramel syrup. Sprinkle in some peanuts and whoo-hoo here we go!

To sum up. Screaming Bananas is quite Ok. I have yet to sample much of their western menu as they are slightly more pricey and i can't freakin afford it, you know, as a tormented intern. Hmph. I get paid 30 bucks a day. And blowing off 30++ on lunch is major overkill.Hmm... But somehow it's not stopping me from going to Fridays/Chilis... xDxD
