Coliseum
Mum's Birthday yesterday. Official one, not the Chinese one. She wanted to celebrate it anyway. How freakin' cheating is that? Where got people celebrate two birthdays one! Hmph.
And she wanted a cake.
"I thought u didn't want a cake when we celebrated ur Chinese birthday?"
"Oh, that was then, i want one now."
Geeez. But seriously, am definitely not complaining. Coz mum usually eats a slice of the cake, and i get to devour enormous enormous slices of the remainder. Mwahaha!
We paid a visit to one of my family's favourite restaurants: Coliseum Cafe.
It's situated right next to the Coliseum Theatre on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in KL, and it looks pretty shabby. We call it the 老爷餐厅, which means shabby restaurant.
Here comes the old cliché: don't judge a book by its cover.
It was first established in 1921, nearly a century old. You could actually see the age painted on the wall.
Like we'd been thrown into a time-machine and traveled back to colonial times. Certainly looked like it. I would describe this place as quaint. Or charming?
*The waiters in Coliseum are generally rather impatient uncles who are very familiar with the menu and are, to a certain extent, cocky. On our first visit a few years back, our waiter was this really really old and arrogant ah pek. When we asked him whether he needed to write down any notes he said "I no need write down one. I memorize the entire menu already." And memorize it he did. He could even spout out the corresponding number to each item on the menu. He doesn't work there anymore though.
Appearances aside, Coliseum Cafe sports a kick-ass menu, serving a whole selection of food including poultry, fish, steaks, soups, vege, toast, and an extensive liquor menu. I can't really remember everything that they serve, as it's a long list. If you're interested u know what number to call. ;)
This is a mocktail named Cinderella. Ha! For us kids! In addition to a myriad of cocktails and liquor shots, they also serve non-alcoholic mocktails for noobs like me. :D
Cinderella is a mixture of lime juice, orange juice, 7-up and grenadine syrup. Served with a cherry. Apparently this is the non-alcoholic equivalent of tequila sunrise / screwdriver. They have other mocktails like Shirley Temple or Mickey Mouse or something like that, but Cinderella is by far the best.
Toasts. I don't mean typical butter/kaya toasts (they do serve kaya butter toasts, but that's beside the point), i mean these! Melted cheese and onion toast. Bread was perfectly toasted, combine that with the melted cheese and the crisp onion shreds sprinkled on top... Heavenly. ;)
Mum ordered this set promotion that they were having which includes a) Russian salad b) French onion soup c) Chicken or Fish and d) coffee/tea/iced lemon tea. Whole set for 30 bucks or something. Not too bad a deal.
Russian salad looks rather cacated. A pretty simple salad. Addition of roe was a good idea though.
Mum's fish, drenched with mushroom sauce with mashed potatoes and mashed spinach. Mashed spinach looked somewhat grotesque, but it tasted fine. A little buttery. Fish was fresh and crispy. No fishy smell. Good, but nothing special here.
The French onion soup was quite excellent. A little bit on the oily side, but excellent. Tastes better than the one offered in T.G.I. Friday's. Friday's one is topped with mozzarella cheese, more impressive yes. Taste-wise, it pales in comparison to the one at Coliseum.
Sis's not-so-good tomato soup. It tasted like... ketchup, as if it came from a can. Sourish-sweetish blah... Do not order the tomato soup at Coliseum. T.G.I.F. wins this time with its tomato basil.
Excluding the tomato, Coliseum serves some tasty soups. The oxtail soup and the asparagus cream soup are excellent. We didn't order those, but we did on previous visits.
Next up. Custard Caramel Pudding. Am not exaggerating when i say that Coliseum serves the best custard caramel pudding that i have ever tasted. The best. Absolute best. It is divine. Super divine. Aaaaaaaah! Orgasmic. It is oven baked, which infuses it with this subtle burnt aroma which is nothing short of divine.
Dad always orders the Fish Concalaise when comes to Coliseum. 1 whole fillet of white fish sandwiched between two chunks of mashed potatoes, drenched with white sauce and cili padi. Spicy. Heads up for cheesaholics who expect a cheesy sauce. The sauce has no traces of cheese in it, unfortunately. Just a simple cream sauce. Dad likes it as he doesn't consume anything cheesy with the exception of pizzas.
Coliseum is particularly famous for its sizzling dishes. All sizzling dishes come with sides of salad (with thousand island dressing), some creamy potato salad, french fries and whole lot of gravy. I was rather tempted to order the sizzling but the waiter recommended the sirloin so...
My sirloin steak. Looked kinda pathetic due to the sparse fries. It tasted marvellous though. Huge slab of sirloin steak. Marvellous. Those who've kept track of my Facebook should know that i've been having this craving for steak. I guess i have temporarily extinguished my carnal cravings to gnaw at meat.
Oh baby. Rather thick steak as well, tender, with a touch of pink in the center. It's just goddamn perfect, perfectly grilled with a perfect smoky aroma. Sigh... Satisfaction. :D
Ice cream, peaches and cream. With sis's skanky hands. Good but nothing to shout about. Everyone can make this at home with canned peaches, vanilla ice-cream and whipped cream.
Finally. More Custard Caramel Pudding. Try these.
***
Next up, mum's cake.
Durian durian from Secret Recipe. I know some people are durian-intolerant, but my family sure as hell isn't! So... Happy Birthday to Mum once again. *she refused to have her picture taken as she wasn't wearing make-up. -_-" women...

Ice
This. Lunch.
Canned tuna mayo + tortilla chips. xD
Original flavoured tortilla chips. I didn't really fancy original flavour and the generous amount of salt sprinkled in, but they'd run out of the other flavours. Tasted fine with the tuna dip.
***
Drove by Ice King at Uptown after our Saturday BKT outing. Curiosity piqued, we ventured in.
The typical ice-blended-beverage-vendor-type menu. Pathetic. Perfunctory.
Brown Bear's mocha ice blended, strangely served with some fruity jelly cubes which didn't go so well with the mocha.
Kiwi shaved ice. Drizzled with kiwi syrup, topped with said fruity jelly cubes and black pearls. It may look like ice-cream but it's actually shaved ice and it tastes pretty good.
Nico and I shared the ABC, which turned out to look pretty messy, with red kidney beans, peanut powder, pearls and fruity jelly squares. U can choose 3 flavours out of a whole selection. The mango and sweet corn ones are marvellous. Strawberry one too fake and sour. Comes with sliced mangoes as well.
:D ABC @ Ice King, definitely worth the try.

Methods
Market Research Methods. Perfect ending to an imperfect journey.
Marketingdinghooi was true to his words, bless him (to have wealth, health, offspring, lots of students who score HD). Exam questions were fantastic.
I should expect nothing less than a D.
To aim for HD is pretty ambitious, bordering on delusional, since i need an incredibly high score of 90% in the exam to achieve HD. I've made a few mistakes, so i guess bye bye HD.
Stupid mistakes man wtf! I didn't know how to explain a linear equation... Fuck.
It was like:
Which means a unitary change in Y results in an alfa change in X1. And so on and so forth. I never expected to be so easy... Wanted to crash my head into something when i saw the answers afterwards in Ting's office.
Didn't do too well for quanti/quali research thingy coz i didn't memorize too much of their characteristics; mostly definitions. Also, i forgot a few steps of the 11 steps of Market Research. Apart from that it was pretty ok.
Am so glad that MRM is finally over, after all the hardships we have endured.

Tread
So... Treadmill.
There's something very wrong with my orange running shoes as, whenever wear them and hit the treadmill, my feet and ankles get all weird and sore-ish. Which is pretty damn ironic, running shoes not being able to serve their purpose.
Which is why i dug out my trusty ACG, fallen soles and all. Stuck the soles back and i'm treadmilling again. 17 minutes. Pretty much what i can do. XD XD XD Much better than when i first joined the gym. 5 minutes and i would be huffing and puffing, gasping for breath, lungs on fire, fish out of water, stitch on side, dying etc.
I have terrible stamina. -_-" Nico says whenever he goes jogging he'll jog for more than an hour.
Hmph. Must persevere. Mum pooh-ed at my 200 calories burnt, saying that i would consume a thousand more when i get back. Still. 800 is still better than 1000. ;)

Random-random-random #4
Some random pictures here.
139.9 calories burnt on the strider. Not to say a painstaking feat, compared to going on the treadmill. Bah. I've seen those people effortlessly knocking off 700 - 800 calories, legs pedaling zip zip zip in super efficient manner.
Pictures super blur. Can't help it. Whenever i try to slow down enough to take a clear shot, the numbers disappear only to be replaced with "Pedal Faster". Oh well.
***
This little bow-like device here is the source of much misery for me. Component holding up my car window. Apparently a wire somewhere sorta ruptured and instead of being straight like | it crumpled into something like 3. So many brain cells dead because of this. Blarrrdy.
***
Woohaha! Roti telur. Flooded with fish curry. Looks a horrible mess but that's the way i like my rotis. I'm always irritated by those skinflint waiters who give me insufficient curry and so i go straight to the curry basins and ladle them all over. :D The waiters don't really care. So i say: flood it!
***
Off for a catnap now, then i gotta start burying myself in books. Friday nite basketball was a pretty lukewarm affair yesterday as everyone wanted to study study study. Geeez!

Bitch!
I do not habitually bitch about my life, as i believe that i lead a fairly cushy life.
But let's just do it once, coz am damn pissed. Not pissed at anyone specific, rather, at the injustice and untimeliness of circumstances!
My body clock is often whacked-up, and so it was this morning. I only managed to sneak an hour's worth of sleep. The rest of my time in bed was spent rolling around, attempting to stay still in one position and thinking of pleasantly calm images (FFX's farplane, to name one) to cheat myself into falling asleep.
I survived my way to uni after downing my maid's super (super!) strong coffee, which gives a remarkable eye-opening awakening effect. Unfortunately, i became groggy once again at noon and i was hanging on the thought that i could fly straight back home at 3 to regain all the sleep i needed.
3 o clock. Rushed to my car. Was steaming hot like a goddamn sauna that my specs fogged up in the heat. So i winded down my passenger seat window and bam! it got stuck. It refused to wind up any further however hard i tugged at it so i decided to drive home anyway.
5 minutes into the journey. It rained. Fucking rained! I cursed my luck all the way.
Then there were those lorries with their exhaust pipes on the side, spraying clouds of black fumes right into my car. Damning fuck!
I eventually sought shelter in a BHP outlet right outside SS2, after yelling in unadulterated outrage at idiot drivers who were driving so fucking slow that any flying insect could have outstripped them.
I asked one of the BHP workers lend me a hand but that hand failed to pull up my window. Called my Dad who was in KL and he told me to get to DU and to call him when i reach and he'd direct me to his workshop.
Arrived in DU, called Dad but his phone was not reachable. "The number you dialed is not reachable." Called him for 20 minutes straight whilst randomly driving around DU, circling round-abouts, repeating U-turns etc. "The number you dialed is not reachable". Fuck. After approx. 30 calls i cursed my luck somemore and decided to go home to get my beauty sleep instead.
Reached home, took a shower, and just when my head reached the pillow, my phone rang. It was dad, asking me to get to the workshop and that he'd already notified the owners that i was coming. Fuck.
Once i got out, it rained again! Had to stick bubble-wrap on window to repel rain.
Once i actually drove out i fell straight into a traffic congestion.
And finally i reached the cursed workshop and i had to wait for an hour or so for this kindly uncle who repaired my window. Apparently some thingy he referred to as a "placard" had ruptured. Was quite intriguing to see how he disassembled my car door though, and i would have shown much more interest if i wasn't feeling like 5 different kinds of shit.
After window was fixed, drove out of DU and bam! Traffic jam again. Got stuck in it for half an hour, as compared to the usual 5 minutes it takes to get home.
Whole series of immensely blood-boilingly annoying events. Luckily i didn't get into further mishaps (punctured tyres, car accident, ran out of petrol) or i would have died in outrage.
But let's just do it once, coz am damn pissed. Not pissed at anyone specific, rather, at the injustice and untimeliness of circumstances!

The backstabbing session here. Wtf. lol xD
Slurp
Stopped by 7-11 the other day so i took the opportunity to purchase one of my favourite childhood drinks: Slurpee.
Purple Slurpee. Laced with colourings, no nutritious properties. But i like!
They seem to have replaced the old yellowish Slurpee cup with a transparent one with snow flakes printed all over it. Apparently this allows people who layer their Slurpee to see their... layers. Quite a cool design, IMO, for a 7-11 drink.
7-11's having this ridiculous Mystery Flavour contest for Slurpee.
2 flavours. Quickie Purple and Juicy Yellow.
I bought Quickie Purple coz purple is sexy. And it's called Quickie!
I immediately regretted as the "mystery" flavour turned out to be any other artificial tutti-fruitti fruitacious flavour, which i hate!
Have yet to try Juicy Yellow. Hmm.
Flavours of Slurpee that i will most likely like and therefore hope to be on sale: Zapple, Sarsi or Root Beer. ;)

JJ is recovering very fast :)
I visited him at his place on Saturday night - we watched movie together, played with his many canine friends and gossiped a lil. Suddenly he hopped into the kitchen, came out shortly after and said he made me a glass of iced Nescafe but he could not take it out - so the sister helped.
That's so sweet of him. Thanks JJ!
I brought him out for supper at Terengganu Road and boy, imagine the stares from the patrons when he walked into the coffee shop on his crutches. Haha!
I hope to see you get on both your feet soon! :)

94.
94.
Yes 94.
For my Managerial Economics assignment. I was astounded when i received my marks. 94 is like super HD of HDs, man. I have never gotten a higher assignment grade.
Honestly i was expecting a C, coz i didn't even draw my graphs myself. I just pasted the ones i got from Chris.
Ergun Dogan is really extreme. On one end he can be absolutely creepy (there was one time, he accused Chris of accusing him... and told her he didn't want to speak to her anymore). He was also stone-faced scary when he asked me for my references for my presentation, which were all copied from another group's. i DID cite the references, which is definitely legal! Then, he can be lenient and let me join Tuesday's class and dish out HD grades for assignments. Elaine got 93.5, Mojo 91, and i glanced around the class and saw a whole lot of 90+s.
Extreme.
Anyway, am very pleased with my internal marks for ManEcons. 8/10 for Mid Term + convert 94 to 18.8 for assignment and i end up with a 26.8/30 internal. Marvellous. Once i pass my final exams, 35/70, i will immediately have a Credit grade of 61.8! Must study study study to get at least a D, or even a HD. God, his angels, seraphims and beard trimmers, give me strength and perseverance!!

Sushi
Sushi Zanmai.
Two freakin' days in a row.
Geez!
Yesterday we celebrated mum's birthday (in the Chinese calendar) at Sushi Zanmai 1-Utama. She didn't want a cake, even though we always buy super nice cakes for her, like this and this. 0_0 Apparently she visited the temple and she was instructed to have vermicelli and a red egg on her Chinese-calendar-birthday to supposedly ensure longevity. Superstition or tradition? You tell me.
Completed the IMC 5% quiz today and i passed with super flying colours! I took the quiz in the library with a whole troupe of IMC students, some of which i don't even know. The quiz has mostly repetitive questions, which are best attempted with a group of people so that answers are memorized. :) It was rather amusing, to think of it. Whole crowd of students surrounding a PC, shouting out answers. The din eventually got out of control and the librarian came over sporting his poker face to shut us up.
Scored a full 5%. Fantastic. So after that i was feeling ravenous to the point of passing out so i joined Joseph and Azu for lunch at Sunway Pyramid. Despite my vehement protests and feeble suggestions of other random restaurants, we ended up at none other than Sushi Zanmai.
Have taken photos for both days but am posting them up together.
Let's start off with Mum's bean curd. Along with it came this wire-mesh-spatula which resembles a fly swatter. I have no idea what it is for. To scoop out the spring onion? Unless you want to play with a miniature fly swatter, don't order this. Its texture is somewhat rough and you shouldn't settle for any white tofu that isn't silky smooth!
The inescapable soft-shelled crab temaki. Crab was as usual, divine. Rest of the temaki? Not quite so. They weren't up to the standard that i blogged about during my first visit here. It's mainly because of the limp seaweed used. Limp seaweed = big no no! Pah. Regardless, soft-shelled crab temaki rocks, even when it is wrapped with limp seaweed.
Deep fried soft-shelled crab. Limp seaweeds be gone! Crabs were wonderfully crunchy, and slightly powdery from the batter. Served with a strange-tasting dipping sauce with a sour tang to it.
Next up, Thur's sukiyaki. Sucky yucky, i call it. Sis will totally agree. Nothing turns me off more than the sight of a whole pot of vegetables. Sigh.
At least it comes with slices of sheet thin beef and a raw egg.
If you're a person who adores soups heavily laced with the earthy flavours of a vegetable garden, the sukiyaki is the thing for you. Mum was raving about it, about how clear the soup was and how heavenly and aromatic it was. Bah. I guess one man's sukiyaki can be another's sucky yucky.
More raw stuff. Sashimi. Salmon and octopus.
Oh my. Don't they look succulent? The salmon was fresh as ever so i wasn't disappointed.
Tako. Sandwiching lemon wedges. I didn't get to sample the octopus as they were snapped up so quickly that when i turned around they were gone. 0_0 They were sorta glistening, which means that they're incredibly fresh as well?
Skewered teriyaki scallops. These tasted lovely. Mm hmm. I wouldn't say that the scallops were juicy as, in my gluttonous hurry to swallow them, i forgot to actually notice. XD Teriyaki sauce was marvellous. Super strong. Slightly sweet. I like!
Grilled beef wrapped around enoki mushrooms. It is drenched in this murky murky sauce which tastes really... weird. It has this strange taste that i couldn't place. In any case, I wouldn't recommend this dish. Sis insists, over and over again, that the grilled beef enoki mushroom combo in Dave's is much much better so i'll give it a try next time.
Salmon fish head. Mum's. She is damn obsessed with fish heads. Salmon heads are overwhelmingly fishy, man! I could still detect a whiff of it even after it was grilled. Mum enjoyed it very much, so ... That's that.
Beef udon noobles. I like udon. Fat and bouncy udon! :) Served with beef slices, extra wakame and some sort of little wild mushroom caps.
Thur's garlic rice. Nothing too special about it. 6 bucks for garlic rice... Geez... -_-"
Finally. The dessert. Green tea parfait consisting of: green tea ice cream, fresh cream, corn flakes, red bean paste and layer of green tea jelly. Scoop of green tea was fantastic. Strong aroma of green tea. Combine it with the corn flakes and... sigh... divine divine.
Whipped cream used was heavenly. Melty cream, sprinkled with some sort of green-tea-esque particles. Super fresh. They don't use those lousy cheaplak stale whipped cream that resembles hair mousse (those that remain solid, poke it and the entire blob of whipped cream comes falling off).
And that's the first two layers. The red bean paste complimented the parfait perfectly. A tad sweet, but since the corn flakes are pretty much tasteless, everything balances out and reaches equilibriumwith a movement along the supply curve.
Strangely enough, the red bean paste tastes like 小羊羹. I have absolutely no idea what 小羊羹 is in english or japanese but they're some Japanese jellied squares of red bean paste that Mum used to buy for us when we were young. The last layer was the green tea jelly which had a slight bitter green tea tinge to it.
Thumbs up for the green tea parfait.
Am saving my two thumbs up for their strawberry parfait which is, according to sis, even better than the green tea one. Super siao case orgasmic. Most unfortunately they were all sold out yesterday so i have to parfait another day.
More pictures at Sushi Zanmai's Sunway Pyramid branch. The dishes above, except the orange-roe sushi, were all ordered by Azu and he was generous enough and let me and Mojo grab a temaki each. ;) 5 temaki combo, soft-shelled crab and sushi.
I didn't snap much pictures on my second visit as i had only sushi and they weren't really interesting. Despite being freakishly hungry, i was full after cramming myself with five plates of sushi. I bet it was due to the fact that i was having a cold that i lost a little bit of appetite. 5 plates of sushi can never satisfy my normal appetite.
Mojo's tempura rice. Looks a complete mess in this pic, but it looks fine in real life.
Argh! I can't resist. Soft-shelled crab temaki. :) I have to post it up once more.
Off to snooze now. Have day off tomorrow so i don't have to slave all the way to uni.
