I was intrigued when i spotted the grand opening of
Popeyes! Yup. 5 minutes away from my house, and strategically located on the street across from KFC.
Needless to say i ventured in to sample their food, which were a... delightful surprise. :)
Popeyes sports a distinct orange store colour. Louisiana Kitchen.. Some southern fried chicken concept i guess.
Now food.
The chicken combo is pretty much the same with KFC's. 2 piece + drink, coleslaw, mashed potatoes and bun / biscuit.
Popeyes' chicken is also similar to KFC's spicy chicken. I wouldn't say that it is better, but it's definitely on par with. I can't really decide between both, but i wouldn't mind either. :P
What i like about Popeyes are their side dishes. They are miles better than the sucky ones at KFC.
Take the biscuit for instance. Honestly i wouldn't consider it a biscuit. More of a.. savoury muffin-scone hybrid. But damn it's good. Slightly crunchy on the outside, and muffinish buttery soft on the inside. Biscuittttt! Compared to that grotesque butter bun, this is just magnificent.
Mashed potatoes. I was astonished! The gravy contained some strange minced meat and chicken shreds. The potato itself was firm and had larger bits of unmashed potatoes in it. Texture. :P
Definitely not a fan of coleslaw, but oh well. This is the clear winner. No hard cabbage and carrot cubes.
The best so far is the Cajun Fries. They are positively divine. Divine! It's not included in the combo, but available as a side. They're slightly thicker pieces of fries and tastes like curly fries. V. v. good. I got sis hooked on this. :D
Popeyes serves shrimp and fish as well, but as i am extremely risk-averse when it comes to seafood, i haven't given them a try yet.
Definitely worth a visit. I'm going back on tuesdays? Or wednesdays (50% off sides) for their cajun fries. :P
