Dim

I think it was... last Saturday? I visited this dim sum place in DJ.

Jin Xuan Restaurant.

Bustling with people. There weren't enough tables to seat the throng of customers so we had to wait for a table to clear out. There was an incredibly harried woman there taking names, and there was quite a long list.

Packed with people cramming themselves with dim sum! Nico told me about this dim sum place in Hong Kong that is freakin huge, occupying one whole floor of a mall/building. Ganas! Patrons have to take a number from a machine in the reception area, and wait for their turn to start pinging up in those number displays. Ganas! Perhaps Jin Xuan should implement this system?

First up. Yam puff stuffed with char siew? Other wise known as wu kok. Or ooh-cock as we always say. XD XD I definitely would NOT recommend this as it turned out to be rather sucky. The yam pastry was incredibly fluffy and crispy, but has a pathetic amount of char siew stuffing in it. As a result the whole yam pastry turned out to be rather dry. Hmph. Don't order this.

Another item that i recommend against is the xiao long bao. 6 bucks for 3 pieces of dried up xiao long bao with no explosion of soup/gravy inside! What kinda xlb has no soup! WTF ok. It will be like any other bao instead.

Now. Char siew bao! I highly recommend this! It's... lovely. :) The bun is delightfully fluffy and isn't sickeningly thick. Char siew filling is marvellous. Oh yeah.

Hmm. CS in the CSB. Looks somewhat grotesque, but don't judge a CSB by it's looks.

Prawn dumplings. Through the translucent skin you can see a whole freakin' prawn inside. I didn't touch these though... Phobic! XD Didn't want my lips swelling to resemble Angelina Jolie's. Ha!

Siew mai. No translucent skin here but you can guess that it's crammed with a huge juicy prawn. Jin Xuan's dim sums with prawns are the ones that you should be eating coz the prawns are incredibly fresh and they come generously stuffed into dim sums. I couldn't stop myself but managed to devour a few without triggering my allergy. :D

Prawn fritters. More prawns. Thumbs up.

Prawn dim sum again. This one has diced prawns mixed with some random vege.

Next up are pork ribs. They called it pai guat wong (排骨王), i.e. king of pork ribs. XD These ribs definitely deserve royalty status, man! My god they were damned divine. The sauce of the ribs is just marvellous, very thick, heavy and has a slight-but-not-sickening tinge of sweetness to it. Damn damn damn! I shouldn't be blogging about these when am troubled by hunger pangs. X(

More ribs! Omg. Ribs! Do note that one plate of these has a 10-buck price tag attached to it. That's right. 10 bucks. Worth every cent though, i must say.

The waiters were carrying this soup around. Hasma with dates in a coconut. More or less that. I have no idea whether it is sweet or savoury because i didn't try as hasma... grosses me out. Frog ovaries (or fallopian tubes? can anyone confirm this?). Yearghaekeafllhkle&*#&%! So anyway i didn't taste it but i did stop the waiter to snap a pic.

Sesame balls, cut into half, stuffed with lotus paste. Crispy. Nothing much to say, really.

Century egg porridge. NSC ordered this, and i didn't give it a try. Don't see any trace of century egg without it stirred.

Egg tarts! I'm turning into quite an egg tart connoisseur, aren't i? Mwahaha! ;) Jin Xuan's egg tarts are not too shabby. I would rank it #2, after Canton-i in terms of taste.

As we were sitting around we saw this batch of egg tarts freshly baked, piping hot right from the oven. So we ordered another 2 plates.

Look at the egg filling. Fascinating in't it? It was burning hot, and i nearly burnt my tongue. Best not to eat it while it's too hot.

This little shelf is where the dim sum are stored before and after they are paraded around the restaurant. Freshly made ones are dumped here waiting to be loaded on trays. There are some other items that i have yet to sample but i'll definitely do so on my next visit.

Our stack of dim sum bamboo containers. :)
