Reading

The thing about not having Internet connection is that my options of entertainment become depressingly limited. Since i don't really watch TV, i spent four days just reading the novels i bought from MPH Warehouse Clearance Sales. And i consider this to be very good time spent. :)

Books read:

The Broker - John Grisham
The Broker is about this broker, Joel Backman's escape from various assassins who are after him for he has access to a software that allows him to hack into and fully manipulate this mysterious and sophisticated satellite system. Not too suspenseful for an escape-from-bad-people novel. Nevertheless interesting as Backman escapes to one of the quiet towns in Italy and lots of Italian culture and language were covered in the book.

The Rainmaker - John Grisham
Rainmaker is a story about Rudy Baylor, a law student and later a fledgeling law practitioner and even later a successful lawyer, and finally a history teacher. The story revolves around this lawsuit against an insurance company whose actions to deny an insurance claim caused a couple their child's life.

Honestly i prefer John Grisham's legal novels like the Rainmaker as his attempts at espionage and spy thrillers are pretty half-assed.

Skipping Christmas - John Grisham
By far the most entertaining book by Grisham. :D Skipping Christmas is brilliant, about the Kranks skipping the hustle and bustle and inevitable spending during the holidays. I like Luther Krank. He is just unbelievably cynical and grumpy.

John Grisham has this talent in writing something freakishly funny in writing something freakishly funny in one sentence hidden amidst lines and lines of other words. I found myself bursting out in laughter quite a few times but after a few pages i couldn't find the humourous sentence anymore. 0_0

Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden
Exotic. Erotic. Poetic. Loads of similes used in the book. Perfect example for teachers to teach their students? I like the way things are described in the book. For instance.

"As a child it seemed to me as if the ocean had caught a terrible cold because it was always wheezing and there would be spells when it let out a huge sneeze - which is to say there was a burst of wind with a tremendous spray."

"He may have been the size of a hippopotamus, but Awajiumi was a very elegant dresser. He wore a pin-striped kimono with kimono trousers. His job was to make certain that all money passing through Gion flowed where it was supposed to; and a trickle from that river of cash flowed directly into his pocket."

Act of Treason - Vince Flynn
Vince Flynn's political / spy thrillers are much more enthralling than Grishams'. All abductions, assassinations or covert operations are meticulously explained and described.

I have yet to finish Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett as i find it rather confusing with conversations like this "This is nae common storm. The Wintersmith has found the big wee hag - noo then, settle doon!" Which is probably some Scottish accent if you read it properly, with all the "wee"s and "doon". Doesn't make it any less confusing to decipher such spellings. -_-
